From 1974 to 1991, he was an assistant coach at seven colleges and universities, including eight years at Arizona State University.

In 1992, Martz made his NFL debut as quarterbacks coach for the Los Angeles Rams. In 1995, when the team moved to St. Louis, he moved to wide receivers coach. Martz left the Rams in 1997 to become quarterbacks coach for Washington before returning to St. Louis in 1999 as offensive coordinator.
