Apollos first-round pick Gilbert takes the field after NFL stint

SAN ANTONIO — There was a buzz as the Orlando Apollos took the field at the University of the Incarnate Word Tuesday morning. Apollos quarterback Garrett Gilbert, the team’s first selection in the Alliance of American Football’s “Protect or Pick” QB Draft, took the field. The Carolina Panthers waived Gilbert after the NFL regular season ended, and the Apollos activated him Monday evening after he cleared league protocols.
The Panthers signed Gilbert, a Southern Methodist University product, for the final game of the regular season. He saw action in relief of injured Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen, completing two of three passes for 40 yards.
How does Gilbert feel to be back in Texas, playing football? The answers are coming up later today.
